The World Apartment — A Modern Home at Sea

How do you design a home when the home itself is constantly moving?

For this residence aboard The World, the brief was not to create a conventional luxury cruise cabin, but a contemporary private home at sea. Designed for long-term living, family life and entertaining, the interior brings the comfort, proportions and sophistication of a high-end Italian residence into one of the world’s most unique residential environments.

The clients had a very clear vision for the atmosphere of their home. They wanted a distinctly modern interior with a cool, restrained colour palette and a strong emphasis on texture rather than colour. Warm tones were deliberately avoided, creating a sophisticated and contemporary environment that feels calm, refined and timeless.

The design therefore developed around a carefully controlled palette of cool ivory, soft grey, taupe and charcoal. Rather than introducing warmth through colour, richness is created through the layering of tactile materials, veined stone, textured wall finishes, textiles, dark detailing and carefully integrated lighting.

The result is an interior that is deliberately understated. With colour kept restrained and warm tones consciously avoided, proportion, texture, materiality and light become the defining elements of the design. This creates visual depth without clutter and allows the constantly changing landscape outside the windows to become an important part of the interior experience.

Designed around how the owners live

A central part of the brief was the owners’ love of spending time together and entertaining family and friends. This led to a strong focus on creating generous social spaces rather than dividing the apartment into a series of smaller functional zones.

The two living areas provide a sense of scale and generosity that is unusual within a cruise environment. The principal living space is centred around multiple generous sofas, allowing the whole family to relax together while encouraging conversation and interaction. The living, dining and kitchen spaces remain visually connected, creating a continuous social environment that can accommodate both everyday family life and entertaining.

This was an important departure from the conventional cruise-cabin model, where space is often organised around efficiency and short-term occupancy. Here, the interior was designed around the experience of actually living in the space.
