Company Name: Costa Crociere
Project Name: Costa Smeralda
Cruise Line: Costa Crociere

Costa Smeralda is a tribute to Italy, to what makes this Country so loved and appreciated around the world.

All her decks and public areas are named after – and designed based on – iconic Italian places. The design of the ship is the result of a unique creative project led by Adam D. Tihany that celebrates Italy and gives guests the chance to experience the best it can offer all in one place. To achieve this, Tihany relied on an international pool of four prestigious architecture firms, Dordoni Architetti, Rockwell Group, Jeffrey Beers International and Partner Ship Design, commissioned to design the various areas of the ship. All the furnishings, lighting, fabrics and accessories are Made in Italy.

Italian design also stars in the CoDe – Costa Design Museum, the first museum ever created on a cruise ship: 400 m2 of space are designed to capture the spirit of “Italian taste” with a selection of over 470 exhibits.

The “heart” of the new flagship is the Colosseum, an area at the center of the ship that is three decks high and dedicated to the best shows. The big screens, positioned on the walls and dome, allow a different story to be created in each port of call and at any time of day, from sunrise to sunset. The Colosseo is like your typical Italian piazza and is lined with some of the main themed lounge bars, where guests can sip on a glass of Ferrari sparkling wine or a Campari cocktail as they enjoy the sea views through the large glass walls.

Piazza di Spagna, on the other hand, is a large stairway on three decks facing astern. Based on the Spanish Steps in Rome, it is the ideal place for entertaining guests of all ages, with a glass-bottomed, open-air balcony on the top deck floor providing the exciting experience of flying over the sea. At the ship’s bow, Piazza Trastevere is the meeting place for various experiences on board: shopping, food tasting, enjoying bars like the Venetian Bacaro or the Gelateria Amarillo ice-cream parlor, and entertainment including acrobats and animators, street artists and musicians. Another picturesque and panoramic place is the Passeggiata Volare walkway that leads to the highest point on the ship, 65 meters high.

The other big innovation is the LAB – Restaurant, where guests can test their cooking skills, under the guidance of Costa Chefs, in a fun and equally educational environment. The planning of activities is based on the concepts of food sustainability, the value of food and responsible eating. Costa Smeralda is the first Costa ship fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel. LNG-fueling is an enormous environmental breakthrough that improves air quality by eliminating virtually all sulfur dioxide emissions and particulate matter both at sea and in port. It also significantly reduces the emission of nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide.
