The ACTIVE SURFACES® project was successfully presented at numerous international prestigious conferences in the field of advanced materials, sustainable construction and environmental pollution, obtaining the consent of the scientific community for the innovative characteristics of the eco-active surfaces of Iris Ceramica Group.

From the scientific point of view ACTIVE SURFACES® are a great innovation, because unlike all the other photocatalytic ceramics on the market, this product exploits the action of titanium dioxide in micrometric and non-nanometric form.

Numerous studies have, in fact, shown that “nano-particles”, due to their extremely small size, can penetrate the human body through the skin and respiratory system and represent a potential health threat, especially for children and workers in the production department. This does not happen in ACTIVE SURFACES®, which use powders with coarser particles, and the ceramics are also heat treated after the application of titanium dioxide to stabilize and vitrify the surface and ensure that the final material has the typical characteristics of porcelain stoneware.

The goals achieved so far have certainly been important and have given scientific validation to the product, but the research by Iris Ceramica Group does not stop and continue, as it is in the DNA of the Holding, in order to constantly improve the product and offer increasingly high-performance solutions capable of really playing an active role in improving the quality of life of the human being.

ACTIVE SURFACES® are distinguished by 4 important properties:

_anti-pollution effectiveness
ACTIVE SURFACES® ceramics are able to permanently and continuously eliminate polluting molecules in the air, including the most toxic and dangerous ones for humans, simply using the light and humidity in the room. When they are used on external facades, for example, they promote the elimination of harmful molecules before they can penetrate the rooms through air conditioning intakes installed outside buildings. There are many other sources of indoor pollution that ACTIVE SURFACESTM helps to combat, degrading all VOCs, however many there are in the environment at the same time.

_Antibacterial and antiviral, in addition to 99% effective, against Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2

The oxidation process induced by the ACTIVE SURFACES® photocatalysis destroys the bacteria that come into contact with the surface, and the presence of silver makes the ceramic antibacterial even in the dark, both on common strains and on strains that are particularly dangerous for health human, such as antibiotic-resistant ones (MRSA). The tests were conducted on two particularly insidious and contagious viral strains such as the H1N1 flu virus and Enterovirus 71, demonstrating over 99% efficacy against viruses. The research was carried out by Iris Ceramica Group’s ACTIVE Research and Development Department in collaboration with the authoritative technical and scientific committee of the two departments at the University of Milan. The resulting data confirmed the astonishing ability of ACTIVE SURFACES® to eliminate 94% of SARS-CoV-2 after only 4 hours of exposure to low intensity UV light (natural daylight and traditional light bulbs even at low intensity).

ACTIVE SURFACES® is able to degrade the main molecules responsible for bad odours in an effective and powerful way, even under LED lights. Thanks to the photocatalytic properties, odour-causing molecules that come into contact with the ACTIVE surfaces are degraded and destroyed, thus eliminating bad odours.

Thanks to the photocatalytic properties of ACTIVE SURFACES®, dirt adheres less to the surface, facilitating its removal.
