Company Name: Trimline

Specific Team: Entire Team

Formed in 1965, Trimline is the longest established interior outfitter totally dedicated to creating world class interiors for the marine industry. Over the decades, our team has amassed a vast knowledge of the complexities of ship refits, earning us a reputation as a global leader. This extraordinary success is down to the passion and commitment of our people.

In early 2021 our new owners, Ross Welham and Nick Farrell, set about developing new technology and systems to further enhance our market-leading position. So, as we emerge from this disrupted year, our fabulous customer focused team now boast exceptional outfitting experience, a passion to deliver the highest quality service and industry-leading technology to assist with the planning and running of refit projects, making us a formidable outfitting team.

Earlier this year, after 56 years in business COO Ross Welham, who has been with the business for over 12 years, and technology specialist Nick Farrell acquired Trimline after being approached by Mike and Gary Oliver who felt it was time to retire from our well-respected business.

Joining the business whilst the world had ground to a halt due to the global pandemic offered an opportunity for Nick to look at old processes with new eyes. Trimline was already scrutinising their workflows as part of their commitment to continuous improvement, and it became clear that he could help us continue our journey with his new technology background.

Nick spent many months embedded at Trimline, getting to know the business processes and that of the industry at large. What rapidly became apparent is that whilst there are plenty of off-the-shelf ERP software available, nothing fully integrated the needs of marine interior outfitting perfectly.

Even with custom development and tailoring, there was nothing that gave us the full range of benefits that we wanted for our team and our customers. That left us with the option to either go for ‘mediocre’ and live with a standard ERP system like Microsoft Dynamics or build our own. Trimline doesn’t do ‘mediocre’ and so that was an easy, though daunting, choice – we would develop it ourselves.

Following that decision, along with our customers and partners, we set about building bespoke software that saves time and improves accuracy, efficiency and visibility from survey right through to project delivery.

Almost a year on, we are seeing huge internal benefits of using the software and customers are loving the clarity & transparency of the new system.

“I find using the new Trimline app hugely valuable. The ability to view live transparent data at any time, and in any location, certainly makes my life easier. Also since using it, Trimline has listened to my feedback and been able to build in extra features which has been fantastic. I can’t wait to get onboard and see how the app helps us during our next dry dock.” Matt Easton, Hotel Refurbishment Manager, Marella Cruises.

The Trimline Senior Management Team has an extraordinary amount of experience between them – over 100 years in total – and are hugely passionate about what they do. They wouldn’t consider doing anything else.

“We have a fabulous and experienced team who are passionate about delivering the highest quality service and as we emerge from this disrupted year, as a team we are all excited about the future of Trimline.” Ross Welham, Co-Owner.

“I can’t wait to see where our team can take the business over the next few years!”. Nick Farrell, Co-Owner.

We focus on forming long-term relationships with all our customers. We take the time to fully understand their brand and the project requirements, so that we can offer them a safe pair of hands.

Once we understand their scope, we highlight any gaps and advise if there is more than one way to approach the project. Wherever possible, we offer cost-effective solutions that maintain the desired aesthetic appeal of the refit.

Our approach helps to relieve some of the pressure on our customers who trust us to run the project smoothly and produce the high-end finish that we are known for.

No matter how much meticulous planning goes on before a refit, challenges often appear once our on-site team sets foot on the ship to start the refurbishment. Time after time, our solution-driven team puts their many years of marine outfitting experience into practice to come up with solutions to the most complex challenges – helping to keep the project to schedule. This level of technical knowledge is one of the many reasons that customers choose Trimline as their low risk outfitting partner.

Our long-serving Surveyors have built up a vast knowledge of the ships we have worked on – often knowing the ship as well as the customer. This knowledge is invaluable when quoting for work as we are able to suggest works that needs to take place as a priority and can offer cost engineering solutions that give the same aesthetic appeal that the designers have proposed. Some of our customers like the way we work so much that they see us as an extension of their team and like to work with us to prepare their scope of works.

The cost-saving doesn’t end there. Once we are on-site there are often surprise challenges, eg once the carpet is taken up and you find a hole in the deck. Our on-site team then discuss possible solutions with cost as a factor, therefore saving customers over-spending.

Trimline has always prided itself on working with the best contractors in the industry. Many of our tradespeople have worked for us for decades and feel like part of the Trimline team. We take time to vet all contractors to ensure they share our values and work ethic. We have found that by working with the best they are able to give a higher quality output, therefore saving time on the overall project schedule.

Trimline is the trusted outfitting partner to many cruise brands. We are valued for our considered long-term solutions which are backed by decades of experience of similar refit challenges. We are often called upon to help write the specification of works due to our in-depth knowledge of the vessels concerned.

Nick Hughes, Head of Technical Operations at Marella Cruises said after the major interior rebrand of Marella Explorer 2, “We are delighted with the results of this project. Trimline has a proven track record in delivering high spec interiors for us and have met the brief again with this mammoth refit. The transformation of the public spaces is remarkable, and we are looking forward to welcoming passengers on board to enjoy the results. We are sure they will respond positively and can’t wait to see what they think when they take to the seas for the new season of sailing”.

Linh Nguyen, Interior Manager at Seabourn said after the refurbishment of ultra-luxury Seabourn Odyssey, “Trimline has risen again in a great partnership we have with them. Their flexibility, knowledge of the fleet and professionalism helps to deliver an outcome that meets with Seabourn’s standards on our most recent Odyssey refit.”

Eline Daetweiler, Senior MRO Manager, Ship Management & MRO, TUI Cruises GmbH had great praise for Trimline after the refit of Mein Schiff 4, saying “We were very impressed by the great team spirit that was visible for us throughout the entire dry dock time. All technical crew were working hand in hand in a very professional way under the leadership of the on-site project management.”
