Long before Virgin dared to fly, there was Ariya: a woman born on the windswept coast of Cuddalore, India, during monsoon season, thunder rolling over the Bay of Bengal, her mother convinced the winds themselves carried purpose. Ariya did not wait for the sea to come to her. She joined a merchant vessel with nothing but a spice pouch, a notebook and an unstoppable curiosity, and turned a single voyage into a lifetime spent trading not just spices but stories, at ports from Zanzibar to Lisbon, Muscat to London. In her journals she wrote: “Every spice carries a story, every story begins at the shore.” That line became a family inheritance, whispered across generations until it reached another Branson, centuries later, chasing horizons of his own.
That woman was Sir Richard Branson’s great-great-grandmother. Ariya, the restaurant, is Virgin Voyages’ attempt to give her something no relative had been given inside the brand before: an original identity built entirely in her name, rather than borrowed from an existing concept or category trend.
Everything about Ariya is drawn from her, not from a mood board. Her restlessness, “let curiosity be your compass, and flavor your horizon,” became the design brief. Her belief that light connects everything, “light travels, so do stories,” shaped a room lit like dusk on the water: saffron-gold surfaces, lantern glow, and a hand-illustrated mural of birds and botanicals that turns her journal into architecture. Her conviction that food is the most honest language on earth became the throughline for the menu, for a welcome ritual built around a single chilled jaljeera offered to every table as her first gesture to a stranger, and for a beverage program built on ingredients she would have carried from port to port: tamarind, saffron, cardamom and jaggery. That same care runs beyond materials – into a bespoke scent created for the room, into culinary creations built to carry her story course by course, and into Indian artisanal artwork chosen piece by piece rather than sourced as decor.
That is what makes Ariya a Best Brand Original Project rather than a restaurant refresh: an entire identity system, name, myth, visual language, ritual and menu, built from one ancestor’s real life and carried into 2026 not as nostalgia, but as evolution. Virgin Voyages did not design a brand and go searching for a story to justify it. It found a story worth turning into a brand.
