Capsule Hotel – SMC Design
Submitted by: SMC Design
Cruise Line & Ship Name: DFDS / Transmanche Ferries
The demand for the DFDS ferry line’s cabins outstripped the number available, so SMC Design & Metalika’s aim was to find a solution that would use the existing space but increase sleeping capacity, while ensuring they remained easy to clean and maintain. Space is at a premium on ships and savings are often hard to achieve without compromising the passenger experience. The Capsule Hotel represents a significant advancement in compact sleeping quarters for marine applications.
It was conceived through utilising Metalika’s structural design and manufacturing expertise alongside SMC Design’s interior design and integration skillset. SMC Design needed to go through many volumetric studies to make sure space could be optimised without compromising on comfort. The quantity of capsules needed to also be maximised to achieve DFDS’ business goals.
The design of the Capsule Hotel needed to look clean, sleek, modern and to aesthetically integrate with the overall ships look and feel. Finding the right balance to seamlessly integrate the capsules into the ship design was challenging but a cohesive design that ticked all the boxes was approved.
The design brief was to prioritise user comfort and convenience. This included considerations such as ease of access, ergonomic design of the sleeping space, and provision for personal storage within the capsules. Integration of USB ports and sockets were also carefully located throughout the capsule.
Materials chosen for the construction of the capsules had to be compliant with IMO regulations, durable to ensure a long robust lifespan & lightweight to keep weight at a minimum.
DFDS had specific brand identity guidelines that needed to be integrated into the design. Collaborating closely and efficient project management between SMC, Metalika & DFDS ensured that the design concepts aligned with the company’s brand values, enhancing brand recognition and creating a consistent passenger experience across their fleet.
Collaboration by SMC, Metalika, & DFDS centred on enhancing the passenger experience, with a strong focus on comfort, convenience, accessibility and entertainment. The positive feedback from DFDS and its passengers highlights the Capsule Hotels’ potential for broader application in the marine industry.
Now on 3 ships, future projects can explore flexible, multifunctional spaces that incorporate sustainable materials and minimalist design principles, meeting the evolving needs of passengers, crew, and operators.
