ASUKA III, NYK Cruises’ new flagship, set sail on her maiden voyage in July 2025, SMC Design are proud to have delivered the complete design package for the ship – from interiors and outside public areas to signage and wayfinding. One of the key spaces is the Grand Spa, a traditionally Japanese wellness destination created to help guests unwind, recharge, and reset while at sea.
Positioned high on the upper decks, the Grand Spa is surrounded by full-height glazing, bathing the space in natural light and offering uninterrupted 180-degree ocean views. This connection to the sea shaped the design approach. The Grand Spa was designed to feel like a journey in itself – a sanctuary that embodies harmony and tranquillity. Through simple geometry, quiet transitions, natural textures, and discreet lighting, an atmosphere of calm and restoration has been created.
The experiences on offer feature a variety of traditional Japanese washing facilities, including both indoor and outdoor baths, individual washing stations and multi-sensory experience showers. The unique positioning of the glass-walled sauna ensures unparalleled views to the stretching seas beyond.
To honour the cultural significance of yudō, the SMC Design team visited Japan to immerse themselves in onsen traditions, bringing a level of authenticity to the specific design requirements requested.
By blending heritage with innovation, SMC Design has created a holistic wellness space where traditional rituals meet contemporary cruising. The Grand Spa aboard ASUKA III sets a new benchmark for wellbeing at sea – a signature lifestyle experience designed to rejuvenate body, mind, and spirit.
