Water and STEEL – a challenging combination

As part of our refurbishment project for Phoenix Reisen GmbH, we developed the pool deck of the cruise vessel MS Amera with a strong focus on sustainability and functionality as well as hazard reduction and accessibility.
Our design concept aimed to create a better guest experience and to reduce the amount of water required and thus the energy needed to clean and heat the entire filling.

By adjusting the steel structure, it was possible to effectively prevent the formation of waves and thus also to reduce water spillage onto the deck surface. The reduced pool volume is compensated for by a shallow water area and a hydro flow system.

The addition of a surrouding overflow protection, which makes cleaning and maintenance work much easier, also helps to minimize the risk of accidents – while at the same time reducing the number of crew members required to take care of pool deck maintenance.

By removing a whirlpool, wider access points have been built in on the newly created platform layout and ladders have been replaced by barrier-free stairs – making it more comfortable for elderly people in particular to access the deep water zone. There is also an open and wind-protected area on the top level that can be used for sun loungers or lounge furniture as extention to the bar seating. A water-covered seating bench has also been integrated inside the pool, inviting guests to sunbathe in the refreshing water. The existing sun awnings have been extended so that guests can enjoy the benefits of the pool deck in the shade, even on hot and sunny days.

Through the accentuated use of mosaic color gradients and solid color surfaces, we have achieved a better visual differentiation of the individual height levels.

Our project contributes significantly to various aspects of sustainability on bord, improving the functionality of the pool deck and enhancing the aesthetics of the outdoor area by meeting and even exceeding the requirements of both the owner and the guests.
