SPA&SAUNA AREA | MS AMERA – Phoenix Reisen
From a Greek-themed outdated design to a contemporary retreat at sea—a new spa experience designed by P-O-I.Design for Phoenix Reisen.
We were commissioned to develop the interior design concept for the redesign of the spa and sauna area aboard Phoenix Reisen’s MS AMERA.
Our goal was to create a contemporary wellness environment that feels bright, inviting, and timeless, while making the unique experience at sea an integral part of the design.
The existing spa area was characterized by a rather theme-oriented aesthetic inspired by ancient Greece.
We deliberately moved away from this approach and developed a new design language focused on lightness, naturalness, contemporary elegance, and well-being but at the same time keep single items of the former concept with a twist in their appearance.
One of the most significant changes was the installation of two new windows offering a direct view of the sea sitting in the new saunas. For us, the sea is the most powerful design element already present on a cruise ship.
Rather than competing with it, our concept was developed to frame and highlight this natural backdrop. Natural light, the horizon, and the ever-changing seascape become an integral part of the wellness experience.
The lighting concept was designed as a key atmospheric element within the interior. In addition to functional lighting, we incorporated indirect lighting to create gentle transitions, highlight architectural elements, and foster a calm and relaxing ambiance. The lighting allows the spa’s atmosphere to evolve throughout the day and creates a particularly intimate and inviting environment in the evening. A shiny wavy ceiling refers to the ocean and reflects all colors to the whole area.
Another key element of our design concept is the integration of contemporary art. We have deliberately incorporated works of art to lend the space personality and visual interest. The hallway areas, in particular, benefit from these additions: the artworks break up the quiet character of the circulation spaces and create unexpected moments of discovery. The result is a distinctive first impression upon entering the spa, which immediately conveys that this is more than just a functional wellness facility.
As part of the redesign, the treatment rooms were extensively renovated and adapted to the new design language. Materials, colors, lighting, and details were carefully coordinated to create a calm and refined environment.
