We are proud to present Sukhothai, a Thai restaurant designed by SMC Design for Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian AQUA, launched in April 2025. As part of the Prima Plus Class, this venue reflects our studio’s ability to celebrate culture through contemporary, world-class design.
Our aim was to create a dining experience that honours Thai heritage, artistry and warmth while delivering the sophistication expected of a new generation of cruise ships.

Guests entering Sukhothai are immediately immersed in the essence of Thai culture. Lighting is soft and atmospheric, with pendant forms inspired by bamboo and rice paper casting a gentle, welcoming glow. This layered illumination provides intimacy while referencing the craft traditions at the heart of the concept.

The flooring introduces a bold geometric pattern, anchoring the space with rhythm and energy. Around the perimeter, dark concave timber panels rise in sculptural curves, up lit to add a sense of importance and presence. These architectural gestures balance refinement with drama.

Walls are dressed in vibrant silk tapestries that reference Thai arts, crafts, and landscapes. These bring colour and vibrancy to contrast with the darker architectural palette. Bamboo detailing weaves across screens and ceiling panels, reinforcing the connection to natural materials and authentic craft.

Furniture and finishes complete the experience. Seating is upholstered in rich fabrics to convey comfort and luxury, while artisan-crafted tabletops, place settings, and cutlery layouts connect directly to Thai dining traditions. Every detail has been considered to create harmony and authenticity.

The result is a dining space that is immersive, sensory, and memorable. Sukhothai is more than a restaurant: it is a celebration of Thai culture and heritage at sea, blending place, craft, and tradition in a contemporary setting.

Through Sukhothai, we at SMC Design demonstrate how cultural narratives can be translated into innovative, high-quality interiors. The restaurant delivers both atmosphere and authenticity, and we believe it is a strong candidate for the CSI Award – Best Dining Space.
