We are proud to present The Local Bar & Grill on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian AQUA, launched in April 2025, as a contender for Best Dining Space. Designed by SMC Design, this 24/7 restaurant offers a welcoming environment that reflects its role as the heart of casual dining and social connection on board.

Located on Ocean Boulevard, The Local combines classic pub comfort with a contemporary, cruise-specific design identity. Its branding is clear and confident, with a warm palette of materials and lighting that positions it as both familiar and fresh.

The design introduces a layered mix of colour and texture. Upholstered banquettes in rich rust tones bring warmth and intimacy, balanced by soft sage chairs and patterned cushions that add a relaxed, residential touch. The geometric tiled flooring anchors the space with rhythm and durability, while textured blue feature walls provide vibrancy and depth. These walls are further animated by sculptural rattan wall lights, whose organic forms soften the palette and reinforce the informal, inviting character of the venue.

Above, the ceiling becomes a focal point: timber latticework panels combine with integrated lighting to create visual interest and a sense of place. Large rattan-inspired pendants add warmth and scale, enhancing the convivial atmosphere while tying into the natural textures found throughout.

The bar itself makes a bold statement with illuminated branding and a crafted timber back bar, showcasing the wide drinks selection while maintaining the approachable tone of the venue. The design ensures The Local feels both day-to-night adaptable and always open for guests – whether for a relaxed breakfast, an easy lunch, or late-night snacks after entertainment.
Indoor and outdoor seating extend the versatility of the space, ensuring that The Local is more than just a restaurant. It is a social hub where guests can feel at ease at any hour. Through careful attention to branding, colour, and texture, SMC Design has created an environment that feels authentic, welcoming and in tune with the all-day, all-guest appeal of The Local concept.
