The Vision of a Battery-Electric Cruise Ship
Presented at Seatrade Cruise Global 2026 in Miami, VISION by the MEYER WERFT Group reimagines the future of cruising. As the world’s first fully battery-electric cruise ship concept exceeding 80,000 GT, VISION demonstrates how innovation and forward-thinking design can support the maritime industry’s transition toward a carbon-neutral future.
Developed by MEYER WERFT’s Concept Development Group, VISION was created to make meaningful decarbonization achievable within the coming decade by leveraging technologies that already exist today. The concept proves that sustainability and commercial viability can go hand in hand.
Measuring 275 meters in length and accommodating 1,856 passengers, the approximately 82,000 GT vessel offers a realistic solution for future cruise operations while significantly reducing environmental impact. At its core is a battery system supplied by Norway-based Corvus Energy. The technology is already available, making the realization of a fully battery-electric cruise ship possible in the early 2030s.
The battery capacity is designed to support large portions of typical European cruise itineraries, including routes such as Barcelona to Civitavecchia. With Europe’s charging infrastructure expected to expand rapidly by 2030, battery-powered cruise operations could become widely feasible. For extended voyages, including transatlantic crossings, the concept can also be adapted to a hybrid configuration.
Beyond propulsion, VISION rethinks cruise ship architecture. Eliminating conventional exhaust treatment systems and large funnel structures frees valuable upper-deck space, enabling a seamless sun deck with unobstructed panoramic views and a stronger connection to the surrounding environment.
Designed as an all-weather destination, VISION incorporates highly glazed, climate-protected public areas that remain usable year-round. Amenities traditionally located outdoors, such as the aqua park, are reimagined as indoor attractions, ensuring comfort and accessibility regardless of weather conditions.
The absence of large combustion engines further enhances the onboard experience by reducing noise and vibration levels. As a concept study, VISION demonstrates how existing and emerging technologies, combined with innovative architecture, could shape a more sustainable and passenger-focused future for the cruise industry.
