Volume Creative – Washed Up
Company Name: Volume Creative
Product Name: Washed Up
Cruise Line: Virgin Voyages
Ship Name: Scarlet Lady
Located throughout the ship in each stair lobby on the Scarlet Lady, Virgin Voyages first ship, Volume designed 3D nautical artwork used as way-finding to assist Sailors in navigating around the decks on board the ship made from fibreglass and metal. The coloured number and singular coloured object help Sailors identify their location, inspired by childhood pop-up self-assembly toys, the design focuses on shape and form (with the absence of colour) to represent every-day objects. The piece uses natural objects found washed up from the ocean to reference what Sailors may see when on vacation and on the beach. Exploration and discovery is encouraged as the piece invites Sailors to survey the detail and discover what each piece is (as if finding it on the beach themselves).
One lift core frame is created from natural objects like corals and shells found washed up on beaches whereas the other focuses on man-made items found at the shoreline. Objects were carved out of clay to create a fibre glass mould, before being fixed onto a geometric framework. Intricate details and messages are hidden within the objects and coloured way-finding deck numbers are accompanied by highlighted objects on different decks to help Sailors navigate.
We feel this piece should win the award for best artwork because it gives way-finding a new meaning, a visual, playful, creative expression unique to the cruise industry that is a beautiful collection of artworks in their own right.
